Monica Lee Band Celebrates Solid
Success… and New Journeys
The Vancouver-based Monica Lee Band has plenty to celebrate these days.
The three-piece band, which offers a completely original and eclectic fusion of roots, jazz, blues, country, indie rock and a hint of gypsy, is freshly back from a fall tour of B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan. Its inspirational songs of love, pain and redemption were so enthusiastically received by audiences that the band is eagerly planning its next touring adventure.
“Our fall tour introduced our sound to a lot of people, and we made a lot of new friends and contacts,” reports Monica Lee, the band’s multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter. “Our summer 2009 calendar is quickly filling up with gig dates.”
Festival and club performances have already been confirmed for communities from Vancouver Island to Saskatchewan. Lee will be joined by her highly skilled musical collaborators: Michael Simpson on percussion and Jesse Waldman on guitar.
The trio is equally elated about the success of its newly released CD. Titled The Monica Lee Band Live at the Libra Room, the CD effectively captures the band’s dynamism in live performances that have pulled heart-strings and shaken rafters weekly for the past three years at the renowned live-music venue on Vancouver’s Commercial Drive. The album also showcases the band’s penchant for improvisation: four of the CD’s 10 tracks were actually written on stage.
Besides generating healthy sales, The Monica Lee Band Live at the Libra Room is winning praise from critics and musical peers alike. Tom Harrison, the Vancouver Province music critic who describes the band as “crowd pleasers … gypsy folk”, enthuses: “She is singing for the people and they are responding.” Spirit of the West front-man John Mann compares Lee’s lyricism to Joni Mitchell’s talent for imagery and poetry, while Nathan Peekay of For The Record Magazine defines the band as “the sound of life! … of new landscapes being explored and musicians finding that special place where birth happens.”
As if all of this weren’t reason enough to celebrate, Lee and her husband Chris Bizzocchi are expecting their first child in January. Following a break from travel to get to know their new family member, Lee plans to resume touring in May. Expect to see her with four-month-old baby and two doting grandparents in tow.
“My folks are both musicians, and huge fans. They’re really excited about touring with us, and about taking care of our little one during performances,” says Lee. “For us, music has always been family affair.”
